If you live near San Jose (or in any of the many other areas at high risk for large earthquakes) you already know there are some things you should do ahead of time to prevent unnecessary damage and injury. If your preparations aren't quite as complete and thorough as you'd like them to be — or even if you haven't started yet — then you're in the right place. South Bay Safety Guy's mission is to help you set and meet your goals for keeping your family safe during and after a quake.
We're here to help you do it.
We'll teach you what to do, help you set priorities, and get you set up with what you need now — before the next earthquake hits. You're doing this for your family as well as for yourself, and every family is different, so we'll work together to make and execute a plan customized just for you.
If you're a do-it-yourself kind of person, or if you live outside our service area (San Jose, CA and nearby communities), then please go ahead and use the navigation bar at the top of the page to explore the rest of this web site. We hope the resources we've provided here are helpful to you, and we wish you the best of luck on your journey to preparedness. The only catch to this method is that you have to do everything yourself.
For those who do live in our area, we can help a lot more. South Bay Safety Guy offers both talks and workshops to get you where you want to go.
Our free talks give you a brief introduction to a few simple, concrete steps you can take to immediately improve your family's safety. These are good for any size group, and give you a quick, easy way to make some immediate progress. They're also free! For more details visit our Services We Offer page.
Of course handing you a brochure, or explaining a few basics, or showing you a couple of quick demonstrations can all be helpful, but we both know that if it ends there, it will end there, and six months later nothing will have changed. While we hope these free talks are valuable, their main purpose is really to motivate you to do more.
Workshops are the main focus of South Bay Safety Guy. These can be done for either individual families or larger groups, they are held in your home or neighborhood so you don't have to travel or get a babysitter, and we'll schedule it at a time convenient for you (generally on a weekday evening or during a weekend). You can do the workshop alone, with your partner, or even with your whole family; it's up to you. There is time to cover a lot more detail than will fit in a free talk, we show specific products that we recommend, and you'll have plenty of opportunity to ask as many questions as you like.
These are workshops, not lectures, so much of the time will be spent working together, hands-on, to accomplish your goals. What kinds of activities can you expect to be doing? Here are some examples:
The Red Cross and government agencies will give you free information. Other companies are happy to sell you disaster-preparedness "stuff". A South Bay Safety Guy workshop puts both of those together and adds a healthy dose of hands-on practice and personalized attention to provide you with a complete package.

Earthquakes, fires, and other hazards are inherently unpredictable. Carrying out a carefully considered program of preparations in advance can be very helpful and can increase your odds of pulling through such a disaster, but no preparations can provide any absolute guarantee. All services provided by South Bay Safety Guy are the best advice I know how to give and are based on my experience, training, and research, but the final responsibility for all choices and for the execution of your preparedness plan lies with you, the client.
